Professional test and tag for electrical appliances
Competent technicians inspect and test portable electrical equipment in accordance with AS/NZS 3760. From office equipment to industrial machinery, the visit is there to help you keep the workplace safe.
Benefits of workplace test and tag
Faults found before the item stays in service
Visual inspection and electrical testing can pick up damaged flexes, failed earth paths and insulation breakdown before the appliance is left in use.
Records for WHS and insurers
Inspection and testing under AS/NZS 3760 produces tags and digital records you can share with auditors and insurers. What the law requires still depends on the workplace and the jurisdiction.
Comprehensive Digital Documentation
Receive detailed digital asset registers and compliance reports for easy audit trails.
Why regular test and tag matters
Regular inspection and testing helps you spot damaged flexes, failed earth paths, insulation breakdown and other hazards before they injure people or interrupt work. Under WHS laws, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) must ensure electrical equipment is safe; following AS/NZS 3760 and related site rules is a widely accepted way to demonstrate that duty of care.

What is workplace test and tag (AS/NZS 3760)?
Test and tag is the practical way many Australian workplaces check that portable electrical equipment remains safe to use. Under AS/NZS 3760, competent people visually inspect and electrically test in-service equipment — power tools, leads, office gear, kitchen appliances and more — then apply a durable tag showing the result, test date and next due date.
It is not a one-off paperwork exercise. Regular inspection and testing helps you spot damaged flexes, failed earth paths, insulation breakdown and other hazards before they injure people or interrupt work. Under WHS laws, PCBUs must ensure electrical equipment is safe; following AS/NZS 3760 and related site rules such as AS/NZS 3012 is a widely accepted way to demonstrate that duty of care. The legal duty itself still depends on the workplace and the jurisdiction.

What’s included
- Visual inspection — damage, wear, missing covers, crushed plugs, overheating marks and other obvious hazards
- Electrical testing — earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and leakage checks as required
- Tagging — durable pass or fail tags with test date, technician ID and next due date
- Digital asset register — itemised results uploaded to your client portal after the visit
- Failed-item advice — clear fail tags and practical next steps
- Flexible scheduling — business hours, after hours or weekends where site access allows
- Retest reminders — so you do not miss the next interval
Need more than appliances on the same day? We can often combine test and tag with RCD (safety switch) testing and thermal imaging in one visit — ask when you book.
Who needs it
If people at your workplace plug equipment into a power point, you likely need a planned test and tag program. That includes:
- Offices, coworking spaces and corporate fit-outs
- Construction, demolition and temporary site power
- Factories, warehouses and workshops
- Hospitality — kitchens, bars, hotels and cafés
- Retail stores and shopping centres
- Schools, childcare and tertiary campuses
- Healthcare, clinics and aged care
- Events, exhibitions and hire fleets
We schedule single sites and multi-site programs across Australia so registers stay consistent from site to site.
How often should equipment be tested?
Intervals depend on the environment and how hard the equipment is used. AS/NZS 3760 sets out recommended frequencies; construction sites also follow AS/NZS 3012. As a practical guide:
| Environment / use | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| Construction & demolition (hostile) | Every 3 months |
| Factories, warehouses, production | Every 6 months |
| Hostile commercial areas | Every 12 months |
| Low-risk offices & similar environments | Up to 5 years |
These are guides, not a substitute for a site-specific risk assessment. See how often a workplace should be tested and tagged.
What happens on a visit
1. Scope and schedule
Tell us roughly how many items you have, the site type and any access constraints. We confirm timing — including after hours if you need minimal disruption — and arrive ready to work.
2. Inspect and test
Technicians complete a visual check, then test with calibrated portable appliance testers appropriate to each item. Unsafe equipment is failed and clearly identified so it can be taken out of service.
3. Tag on the spot
Passed items receive a durable tag with the test date, technician ID and next due date. Failed items are marked so nobody puts them straight back into use by mistake.
4. Report and remind
Results go into your digital register and client portal. You get an itemised record for audits and insurance, plus reminders when the next round is due.
What you receive
- A tag on every tested appliance (pass or fail) with test date, tester ID and next due date
- A digital report and asset register listing each item, location or ID where captured, result and any faults
- Practical advice on failed items: remove from service, repair or replace
- Access via your secure client portal so compliance records are easy to find when an auditor or insurer asks
Industries we support
Test and tag is relevant wherever portable electrical equipment is used. Typical sectors include corporate and commercial offices; construction and industrial sites; hospitality and retail; education and childcare; healthcare and aged care; events and expositions; and manufacturing and warehousing.
If you manage national or state portfolios, tagging intervals and reporting formats can be aligned so every site uses the same records.
Related electrical checks
Appliance testing covers the equipment people pick up and plug in. Two other checks are often useful on the same visit:
- RCD testing — checks that residual current devices (safety switches) trip within the required time
- Thermal imaging — infrared scans of switchboards and distribution equipment while the plant stays live
Where a site needs them, we also provide microwave leakage testing and biomedical equipment testing. Mention what you need when you contact us.
Frequently asked questions
Test and tag means visually inspecting and electrically testing portable electrical equipment, then attaching a durable tag that shows whether it passed, when it was tested, who tested it, and when it is next due. It is the everyday name for in-service inspection and testing under AS/NZS 3760.
WHS laws require PCBUs to ensure electrical equipment is safe and properly maintained. AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised standard for how to inspect and test that equipment. Regular testing and tagging is one way to show that duty is being managed. What the law requires still depends on the workplace and the jurisdiction, and insurers often ask for the records.
Portable electrical equipment used in a workplace, including power tools, computers, printers, kitchen appliances and extension leads. Safety-switch checks are a separate RCD test, not part of the appliance tag.
It depends on the environment and how the equipment is used. As a guide, the intervals on this page are 3 months for construction and demolition, 6 months for factories and warehouses, 12 months for hostile commercial areas, and up to 5 years for low-risk offices. These are guides, not a substitute for a site-specific risk assessment.
AS/NZS 3760 calls for a competent person. AGE technicians are trained for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
You receive a pass or fail tag on each tested appliance, with the test date, tester ID and next due date, plus a digital report and asset register in the client portal.
We tag it as “FAIL” and advise you to remove it from service. We can also recommend repair or replacement.
Yes. Multi-site operators can schedule coordinated visits so the registers stay consistent from site to site.
New equipment still requires a visual inspection and tagging, but may not require full electrical testing immediately, depending on the circumstances. The tag will indicate it’s “new to service” and the next full test date.
Some equipment may need to be turned off briefly for testing. Visits can be booked in business hours, after hours or on weekends where site access allows, and the timing is agreed before the technician arrives.
