What office electrical compliance covers
For most offices, electrical compliance sits across several related responsibilities. The electrical installation itself, including switchboards, wiring and fixed outlets, must be installed and maintained appropriately. A failed item must be clearly identified and removed from service promptly. It should not remain under a desk or in a storeroom where another employee may reconnect it. Repair, replacement or disposal should be documented before the asset is returned to use.
Testing intervals depend on the environment
There is no sensible one-size-fits-all testing interval for every office asset. AS/NZS 3760 provides guidance based on the type of workplace and equipment use, while some industries, contracts and state-based requirements may specify more frequent checks.
A conventional office area is usually lower risk than a construction environment, but the risk can increase where equipment is frequently moved, used by visitors, exposed to cleaning activities or connected through multiple extension leads. Shared equipment in training rooms, hot-desking areas and client-facing spaces may also require closer attention than a permanently installed workstation.
Your testing schedule should consider equipment type, likelihood of damage, user behaviour, previous failures and the consequence of an electrical incident.
